+ Paired Reading: One Method

Let students read together in pairs.  Here are some suggestions from Donna Ogle and Amy Correa-Kovtun, via Kevin Feldman.  Instruct the pairs:

Choose a book together and find a place where you can sit comfortably.  Bring a notebook and pencils to jot vocabulary and answers to questions.

First: Preview

Both of you look at the cover and the title.  Ask each other “What could this book be about?”  Look for a table of contents and consider “How is this book organized?”  Looking through the book together, ask “Does the book have…(see below)”  Then talk about what you find.

  • Chapters? Headings?
  • Maps? Charts? Diagrams? Pictures & captions?
  • Index? Glossary?
  • Specially marked vocabulary? Author information?

Second: Read the text together

Decide who will read page one aloud, and who will read page two.  Read the first two pages silently; think about what they mean.  Note words you don’t know how to pronounce and ask your partner about them.  If your partner doesn’t know, ask the teacher or check the glossary. 

Silently reread the page that you will read; think about expression and pacing.  Think about a comprehension question you want to ask. 

If you are reading the first page, read it aloud.  If not, listen as your partner reads the page. 

If you are the reader, ask your partner the question you decided to ask.  If you’re the listener, asnwer the question your partner asks.  Now, switch.  Continue taking turns until you are finished.

Last: Think and talk about the text

After you have read the pages, share what you liked and learned about the text.  Ask yourselves the questions below, and write the answers in your notebook.

  • What words do you want to remember?
  • What other questions do you have?
  • Do you want to read another book on this topic?
  • What are interesting facts/thoughts to share with everyone?
