In July 2008, Columbus Ohio’s Marburn Academy will provide their annual summer programs in Language Skills,   Math Skills,   Written Expression  and  Phonemic Awareness.  Marburn is Columbus’s premier K-12 school for children with learning disabilities.

Fees are $1700 (Language Program), $1300 (Math), $1000 (Written Expression Program) and $700 (Phonemic Awareness). 

An Early Bird discount of $200 applies if the Language Program admission process is completed and fees are paid before May 1, 2008.  And Marburn does reserve the right to cancel a class in the unlikely event it does not achieve minimum enrollment.

Language Program   

July 1-31 weekdays  8:45-12:15  Ages 7-12

designed for students who need to improve their reading and writing skills and become successful readers and writers.

  • daily one-to-one language tutorial using Orton-Gillingham multisensory instruction
  • daily Visualizing & Verbalizing(R) and Making Meaning techniques for improving comprehension, retention and vocabulary
  • daily composition using computers to build fluency and improve creative use of language
  • daily computer lab work, featuring keyboarding instruction and practice, computer art, desktop publishing of written compositions, and structured practice of reading and spelling skills using the Lexia Learning Fluency software

Math Program    

 July 1-31 weekdays  1:00-4:00 pm  Grades 3-8

specifically designed to make math learning active and enjoyable in a social context, and to help students see themselves as capable math learners  

  • daily use of manipulatives to create models of math concepts
  • daily cooperative work creating and solving problems
  • daily activities which are high interest and  especially chosen to appeal to this age group
  • daily use of computer and web-based programs (Symphony Math, Fastt Math, and Lexia Learning’s Visual-Spatial Cross Trainer) reviews basic math skills and strengthens visual memory and tracking skills
  • daily practice with tricks and shortcuts that make problem solving manageable

Written Expression Program  

July 2-30 M/W/F  1:00-4:00  Grades 6-8

structured and sequentially presented, making use of short, engaging assignments to improve writing fluency, passage unity, and word choice; designed to help students experience success while using writing as a tool to communicate their thoughts

  • a variety of short poem writing and publishing of finished pieces to create a positive feeling toward writing
  • group interaction and brainstorming which encourages creative word choice for discovering lively and precise language
  • fluency building activities so that words flow easily
  • incremental revision processing,  directed at guiding the student toward   eventual expository writing

Phonemic Awareness Program  

July 1-31  weekdays   9:00-11:00   Ages 5-6

research has shown that phonemic awareness skills are an essential prerequisite for learning to read, write and spell; these classes engage children with low PA and open the door to reading success

  • daily rhyming activities
  • daily work with syllables and syllabication
  • daily auditory perception/discrimination activities
  • computer work with Lexia Learning web-based software
